The BB3500M design is shown in Fig.5.

The BB is assembled in water-cooled housing consisting of three main parts: central cylindrical part (1), rear flange (2) and front flange (3). The central part is made of stainless steel, while the flanges are made of bronze. Outside diameter of the housing – 260 mm, inside diameter – 200 mm. Total length of the BB is 860 mm, length of the central part – 500 mm.


The radiator (4) is a cylinder assembled from individual PG rings with external and internal diameters of 73 mm and 59 mm correspondingly. The radiator is mounted inside the housing along its axis. Internal cylindrical walls of the radiator, flat V-grooved bottom and output diaphragms form the radiating cavity (5).


The radiator is supported from both sides by the graphite electrodes (6) and (7) tightly clamped on the front and rear flanges. When heated up to 3500 K, the radiator lengthens by about 30 mm. Therefore the rear electrode is equipped with a movable graphite plunger (8), which is made free to slide in the electrode. The rear flange is equipped with a compression spring (10), which is pressing on the radiator via ceramic rod (9) and the plunger in order to hold the set of rings between the electrodes.


The radiator is surrounded by the thermo-shield (11) consisting of outer and inner parts. Both part bodies are made of graphite and have a shape of bobbin. Both, inner and outer, bobbins are wrapped in many layers of graphite cloth, which is a good high-temperature insulation material. The inner part is slid inside the outer one and fixed by means of thread in the front. The inner part can be take out and replace by new one if necessary. Inside the inner bobbin there is a graphite tube-shape screen, which protects the body of the bobbin and can be replace if necessary. Outside cover of the thermo-shield is made of stainless steel. Outer diameter of the thermo-shield is 180 mm, length –450 mm.


Thermal screens (12) and (13) protect the housing flanges from the overheating.
